Hyderabad: Prohibition and Excise Minister V Srinivas Goud on Friday said the department has drawn up an action plan to curb drug menace in the State. Participating in a review meeting convened with excise officials here, the Minister said the department has already started gathering information about the drug peddlers.
He said the Chief Minister had already declared an all-out war against drug menace and asked the police and excise officials to deal with the illegal cultivation, sale and consumption of marijuana in the State with an iron hand. Peddlers were getting marijuana to the State from Andhra Odisha Borders (AOB). From Hyderabad, it was supplied to Karnataka and Maharashtra, he said, adding that Dhoolpet has become a centre for supplying marijuana. The crackdown launched against the sale of illicit-distilled liquor in the State enabled the enforcement agencies to completely control it. “In the same manner, we will launch a crackdown against drug menace,” he said while interacting with media persons after the review meeting.
“We will also give cash rewards to the persons who furnish information about those supplying marijuana and the names of informants will not be revealed,” he said and added that a dedicated team was also constituted to deal firmly with the peddlers.
With the help of a small input, the department officials detained a few persons from Kukatpally on Friday for allegedly possessing the contraband worth Rs 2 crore. “Our officials are questioning them to know more information about the origin of the contraband,” he said. “We are hopeful of controlling the menace in a short period if our strategy fructifies,” Goud said, adding the assistance of the Police Department would also be taken in the crackdown exercise.
