Pochampally is popular for its exquisite sarees that are woven through a unique style called Ikat which received a Geographical Indicator (GI Status) in 2004. The sleepy town is also known as Bhoodan Pochampally to commemorate the Bhoodan movement launched by Acharya Vinobha Bhave from this village on April 18, 1951.
In November last year, the UNWTO declared Bhoodan Pochampally village as one of the best tourism villages in the world from 170 proposals received from 75 countries. The Centre recommended three villages – Kongthong in Meghalaya, Ladhpura Khas in Madhya Pradesh and Pochampally in Telangana where Pochampally bagged the UNWTO best tourism village award. The prestigious award was presented on the occasion of the 24th session of the UNWTO General Assembly on December 2 last year in Madrid, Spain.
