POCSO accused escapes from Mahabubnagar District Jail; prison officials launch inquiry
An accused in a POCSO case allegedly escaped from Mahabubnagar District Jail after scaling the prison wall in the early hours of Monday. The DIG of Prisons has launched an inquiry into the security breach, while efforts are underway to trace the absconding accused.
Mahabubnagar: A POCSO accused who escaped from the Mahabubnagar district jail on Monday morning allegedly attempted suicide by consuming pesticide after reaching his native village, in a dramatic turn of events.
The accused, identified as Kishore Kumar Reddy of Nandimalla village in Amarchinta mandal, was remanded to the Mahabubnagar district jail after a POCSO case was registered against him at the Amarchinta Police Station on June 10. During his incarceration, he had been working in the jail canteen for the past 25 days.
According to reports, Kishore Kumar Reddy escaped from the jail in the early hours of Monday by scaling the 18-foot-high rear wall of the canteen premises. Jail authorities, upon discovering his escape, immediately lodged a complaint with the One Town Police Station, triggering a search operation.
The accused reportedly reached his native village, where he stayed for a couple of hours before allegedly consuming pesticide in agricultural fields in an attempt to end his life. Family members noticed his condition and shifted him to a hospital in Wanaparthy.
Doctors treating him said his condition was critical and that he would remain under observation for the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, prison authorities traced the accused’s whereabouts, bringing some relief to the jail administration. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into both the jailbreak and the subsequent suicide attempt.
The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons and the Mahabubnagar Jail Superintendent declined to share details of the case with the media. Reports said this was the first instance of an accused escaping from the Mahabubnagar district jail.
