Polavaram: Union Minister for Water Resources Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Friday said that the Centre and the Andhra Pradesh government were making efforts to complete the first phase of Polavaram project within a year.
The union Minister who visited the project sites of Polavaram along with Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy in the morning, also gave an assurance that the Centre would bear the entire cost of the project. Though the Polavaram project was contemplated as early as in 1970s, it was late YS Rajasekhara Reddy who as Chief Minister tried to take it forward. The project was now being executed under the AP State Reorganisation Act, 2014, he said.
Shekhawat and Jaganmohan Reddy also interacted with the displaced persons at Indukuru of Devi Patnam mandal and at Taduvai rehabilitation colony.
In his address, Jaganmohan Reddy said Andhra Pradesh would prosper only when the Polavaram project is completed. On its part, the state government, along with the Centre would provide all assistance to the displaced persons. The state government would keep its promise of giving Rs.6.8 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh under the R and R package, and also give Rs. 5 lakh per acre to those who gave their lands for only Rs. 1.5 lakh during the Rajasekhara Reddy government, he said.
