Warangal: The Intezargunj police rescued two infants and arrested six child traffickers near the municipal park here on Tuesday.
The arrested were Mudavath Sharadha of Vijayawada, Rudhrarapu Swaroopa, Odela Anitha of Warangal, Sheela Bhen Patni of Gujarath, Kori Anuradha and Salma of Maharashtra.
“During the interrogation, the accused have confessed to the crime,” said Police Commissioner Dr Tarun Joshi. The SP said that Rudraraupu Swaroopa and Anitha of Warangal had acquainted with a transgender Sunitha of Siddipet who offered them money if they could arrange a baby girl to her. Subsequently, Swaroopa and Anitha contacted their mutual friend Sharadha of Vijayawada who promised them to arrange the girl and handed over the baby to them on January 11, 2022.
As the baby girl was ready to sell, the duo informed the same to the transgender Sunitha. Following this, Sunitha had come to see them and paid the amount of Rs 2.50 lakh and took the child. But Sunitha called them over the phone and informed them that the baby girl she had received had been infected by a chronic disease and asked them to provide another baby girl.
“On Feb 10, 2022, Sharadha from Vijayawada came to Warangal with another one Anuradha, Sheela Patni and Salma who brought another a baby girl for the ‘replacement’,” the CP said, and added that Swaroopa had met them along with the sick baby at the Venkataramana lodge at Warangal asked them to hand over the baby girl.
“But the Maharashtra party Anuradha, Sheela Patni and Salma demanded some more money and picked up an argument with them. Then Sharadha snatched the new baby girl from the Maharashtra party and placed the ill baby in their hands and fled from the scene,” Joshi said.
Following a tip-off, the Child Welfare Department officials rushed to the spot and took the baby into their custody. The officials also alerted the police who nabbed them Based on a complaint from Adepu Chaya Devi, Grade-I Supervisor, ICDS, Warangal Project, the police registered a case.
