Jagtial: Dharmapuri police on Wednesday rescued a group of devotees stranded in the Godavari river near the temple town.
The water level in the Godavari at Dharmapuri rose sharply following heavy inflows from the Kaddam project and continuous rains in upstream areas over the past few days.
Municipal and police officials had visited the riverbank to alert devotees to leave the water when the level suddenly surged within ten minutes. While some were able to return to the bank, a rivulet joining the Godavari near Dharmapuri also swelled rapidly, leaving several devotees trapped midstream.
Police personnel entered the water and guided the stranded devotees to safety. The rescued pilgrims later thanked the police for their swift response.
