Popular Telangana poet Andesri passes away at 64

Andesri, acclaimed Telangana poet and writer known for the state song Jaya Jayahe Telangana, passed away at 64 while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital. A key voice in the Telangana movement, he is survived by four children.

Hyderabad: Popular poet and writer Andesri passed away on Monday morning while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital. He was 64.

He fell sick after his health deteriorated around midnight on Sunday. He collapsed at his house in Lalaguda, and his family members immediately shifted him to Gandhi Hospital.


He breathed his last at around 7.30 am, the doctors said, according to reports.

Andesri, a noted poet, was born in Rebarthi in Jangaon and his actual name was Ande Yellaiah. He is survived by three daughters and a son. Despite having no formal schooling, he emerged as a popular poet and writer, and was awarded a doctorate by Kakatiya University.

The work “Mayamai Pothunnadamma” brought him significant popularity. He played a crucial role in the separate Telangana agitation, and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had felicitated him on June 2 this year and presented a cash award.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed grief over the demise of Andesri, who penned the Telangana State song “Jaya Jayahe Telangana”.

He said the poet’s death was irreparable loss to Telangana’s literature. His songs played a crucial role during separate Telangana agitation, the Chief Minister said and recalled his association with him. He also expressed condolences to the bereaved family members of the poet.

The Chief Minister issued directions to the officials to perform his last rites with State Honours.
