Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Friday lashed out at the Centre on Friday, stating that the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana was bogus and that the current policy governing crop insurance was unscientific.
“There are a lot of shortcomings in the existing policy which need to be rectified to ensure that the benefits of crop insurance reach the grass root level farmers,” the Chief Minister said.
Chandrashekhar Rao pointed out that the State governments submit a preliminary report to the Centre on the losses suffered by farmers in rains and floods. “The Central government then sends a team to assess the damage, and very often, these teams turn up very late. At times, they come after three or four months, delaying the process further,” he explained.
The Chief Minister said during assessment for crop insurance, the claim is approved only if an entire village or mandal gets affected. A section of farmers, who suffer losses in a particular village or mandal, are not paid crop insurance, he explained.
Intervening during Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy’s response during question hour in the Legislative Assembly here, Chandrashekhar Rao said the State government has already instructed the District Collectors to enumerate crop losses and other damages on account of the recent cyclone Gulab. “We are waiting for the reports and the government will extend all support to people, including farmers, who suffered losses,” he said.
He also said the government would consider the issues faced by tenant farmers in special cases on humanitarian grounds. Legislative members can bring their issues to the notice of the State government for necessary action, he said.
