Prisoner escapes from Aluva Sub Jail, police launch search operation

A prisoner arrested in a mobile phone theft case escaped from Aluva Sub Jail in Kerala on Monday, prompting police to launch a search operation. Madhur Jya Sonowal, 28, was reported missing after prisoners were allowed out of their cells

Kochi: Police launched a search operation after a prisoner hailing from Assam arrested in a mobile phone theft case escaped from the Aluva Sub Jail near here on Monday, officials said. The absconding prisoner was identified as Madhur Jya Sonowal (28), a native of Dhemaji in Assam, who was found missing from the jail around 4.30 pm.

Following a complaint lodged by Prison Department officials, Aluva police registered a case and launched an investigation. According to police, jail officials allowed the prisoners to leave their cells around 4 pm to move around inside the jail compound for half an hour.

However, Sonowal did not return by 4.30 pm, following which the officials searched the jail compound but could not find him. Police are collecting information from people in the vicinity of the jail to ascertain whether Sonowal was seen in the area after his escape. Police said Sonowal had recently been arrested in a mobile phone theft case registered at Edathala police station and was remanded in judicial custody on Sunday.
