Hyderabad: The environs of Liberty near Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) head office witnessed some tense moments when private contractors, demanding immediate release of their pending bills, participated in a massive protest on Thursday.

Hundreds of contractors holding posters inscribed with “No Payment, No Work”, slogans squatted at the entrance of the GHMC head office building and raised slogans against the Corporation.

The contractors argued that the Corporation failed to clear pending bills and demanded it be immediately cleared. During the course of the protests, two Contractors tried to self-immolate by pouring petrol on themselves.

The Contractors said they were facing several problems and some of them had borrowed money on high interest and completed the works. In view of the protest, the police were deployed in huge numbers.

Meanwhile, the GHMC Commissioner, K Ilambarithi invited the protesting contractors and launched discussions to ensure the protests do not go out hand and pursue them to call-off the stir. The two contractors who tried to self-immolate were rushed to a nearby hospital, where their health condition is reported to be stable.
