Hyderabad: Nursing staff at a private hospital in Ibrahimpatnam, Rangareddy district allegedly conducted a cesarean section on a pregnant woman. They reportedly received instructions over the phone from senior hospital obstetrician who was not physically present in the hospital premises, angry and upset relatives of the pregnant woman alleged.

Through the alleged cesarean section, the pregnant woman gave birth to twins, who were born premature at 18-weeks and died in few hours. This development triggered massive protests, as relatives of the pregnant woman alleged that the senior obstetrician in the hospital was not present and she gave instructions over phone to the nursing staff on conducting the procedure.

Alerted by the development, senior officials including District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO), Rangareddy district conducted inspections of the private hospital and seized the facility.

“To conduct any procedure, a senior doctor must be physically present at the operation theatre in the hospital. We have seized the facility and will conduct a thorough enquiry. The relatives of the pregnant woman are alleging that the procedure was conducted by the nursing staff while they received instructions over phone from the obstetrician,” senior Rangareddy district health authorities said.

The woman who delivered the twins is in stable condition. According to authorities, she conceived the twins through an IVF treatment, and there might have been a need for an emergency surgery due to non-viable nature of the pregnancy. The relatives of the pregnant women conducted dharna and demanded justice from the authorities. Later, they reportedly also lodged a complaint on the private hospital and doctor for alleged medical negligence.
