Warangal: The poor success rate in preventing or solving theft and burglary cases by the Warangal commissionerate police has become a matter of worry for the people, and the police too. Data shows that Warangal Police have not been able to solve 50 per cent of such crimes over the recent years.

Last year, 911 thefts took place under the Warangal Commissionerate, but only 486 cases were solved. Overall, of the total Rs 10.86 crore stolen, only Rs 4 crore was recovered. This year, the thefts have already crossed the 900-mark, but the recovery percentage has not even crossed 50. In 2022, a total of more than 756 thefts took place and 416 cases were solved. A total of more than 6.19 crore of property loss occurred, but only Rs.3.01 crore was recovered.

Although there are more than enough police personnel in the Commissionerate, most of the thefts and burglary cases are not solved. Even as the police have been conducting nakabandis, patrolling at night and checking vehicles, there has not been much of a dip in theft cases.

“Police always have a tough task at hand to detect theft cases. It is after a long investigation, tip-offs from informers, keeping a check on criminals on record in property offences and various other probe methods that police catch hold of the culprits,”  a police officer said.

Police claim that the way the recent thefts in the Warangal City and surrounding areas took place, it appears that professional gangs are operating in Warangal. Police officials claimed that professional gangs from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and other areas are often committing thefts in Warangal Commissionerate limits. Due to the operation of inter-State gangs in the city and surrounding areas, it is becoming a challenge for the police to identify the criminals.

The theft of gold worth more than Rs 13 crore from SBI Bank Rayaparthy branch created a commotion across the State. Police have formed special teams to identify the accused, but so far it has not found any lead.

While the frequent thefts in Warangal Commissionerate are causing a stir, there is criticism that the police officers are failing to stop them.  The people want the police to focus on the thefts and to identify the criminals and to increase the focus on recovering the stolen cash and gold.
