Projects worth Rs 7K cr to reshape Hyderabad water supply

Hyderabad: The complete shape of the drinking supply and sewerage management networks in the Hyderabad Urban Agglomeration (HUA) limits is all set to change, with the State government initiating eight projects at a staggering cost of Rs 7,528.21 crore.
These projects include the infrastructure works worth over Rs 5,000 crore announced by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao recently. Among the eight works, four will boost water supply, three will treat sewage and one will strengthen the sewerage network.
The much awaited Sunkishala Intake Project is also underway and infrastructure is being built to permanently draw water from the foreshore of Krishna River. Post its completion, the emergency pumping arrangements that are taken up by Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) during summer to meet the water needs of Hyderabad can be avoided.
Another project is also underway to boost water supply in extended areas of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) villages with Rs 1,200 crore besides two more projects being built with Rs 285 crore and Rs 430 crore. Post completion, they will ensure adequate water supply to 190 villages situated beyond Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits and within the ORR area, Singur, Kollur 2BHK Housing Society, Kokapet Township and their surrounding areas.
A 1,800 mm pipeline is being laid along ORR and Godavari water is being diverted to Manjira. Apart from developing infrastructure to increase water supply, 31 STPs near Musi with Rs 3,866.21 crore will be built. They would be established in addition to the existing 25 plants.
Meanwhile, with Rs 297 crore, rehabilitation,strengthening and improvement of sewerage system in parts of Jubilee Hills,Tolichowki, Golconda, Banjara Hills, Nampally and their surrounding areas is underway.
