Nirmal: Forest Minister Allola Indrakaran Reddy said that everyone should strive hard for end further encroachment of forest lands once the long-pending issue of podu farmers was addressed. He was addressing public representatives belonging to various political parties and district authorities at a meeting held here on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Indrakaran stated that 19,543 acres of forest land was occupied as against the total forest cover of the district, 3,06,500 acres. He informed that Khanapur, Kubheer, Sarangapur, Mamada and Mudhole mandals registered widespread encroachment of the forests. He opined that there was a need to protect forest lands and eradicate the menace.

The Minister said that Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao formed a high-level committee comprising Ministers Satyavathi Rathod, Jagadish Reddy, Ajay Kumar, Indrakaran Reddy and Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar to address the podu land issue. The committee, which studied the issue, found a solution to it, he stated. He exuded confidence that the government would do justice to the farmers. He asked foresters to take steps to prevent encroachments in the future. He advised them to dig trenches around forests.

He then administered a pledge to participants of the meeting stressing the need to protect the forest cover of the district.
