Hyderabad: The protests by family members of police personnel of different battalions, which was hitherto limited to districts, has now reached Hyderabad and similar protests are being staged at Secretariat in the city since Friday morning.

Despite police obstructing the family members of the police personnel, many rushed towards the Secretariat to lay siege and are staging protests. The videos and images of family members, especially women, crying inconsolably, are going viral on different social media platforms.

A woman from the Nalgonda battalion said she came here all the way to meet her bridegroom. “He is being posted at different places and due to the abnormal working hours and postings, our marriage is getting delayed,” she said.

The State government should post the police personnel at one place. At times, they were being posted at one particular location for 10 days and immediately reposted to another place, she lamented.

The special police constables previously had a 15-day duty circle with four days off, but under the Revanth Reddy government they were forced to work for 26 days with only four days of rest, the protesters pointed out.

“These postings are making lives miserable for us and we cannot even celebrate festivals. Whenever I call him for a festival, he says duty. If he is posted at one place, we will get married and live happily,” one of the protesting wives said.

As the women wanted to stage protests and raise their concerns, police prevented them and took many into custody. The police highhandedness is being condemned by people from different sections.

This was not an isolated case. Many women from different battalions have been raising similar complaints. Since the last few days, women carrying their children have been staging protests at Nalgonda, Dichpally, Mamanoor, Jogulamba Gadwal and other places.

Holding placards and banners, women have been staging protests and charging that their husbands were being made to work as bonded labour and were forced to stay away from their families for many days. They wanted the government to protect the fundamental rights.

Irked over the protests, the government had even placed a few constables under suspension.

Condemning the abuse and manhandling of the agitating women and their children, former IPS officer RS Praveen Kumar on Thursday demanded that the government cancel the new permission policy in TGSP. He also suggested formation of a committee on the “Ek Police” system and treating all the wings of the police equally.

Sharing videos of women running towards Secretariat on Friday, RS Praveen Kumar on X said: “Another sad day in Telangana under Congress rule. It is because of anti-police welfare policies of Telangana Home Minister and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, hundreds of family members of Telangana Special Police have hit the roads in protest in Hyderabad along with kids today…”
