Adilabad: Dalit organisations demanded justice for the kin of Rahul, a 26-year-old who allegedly died by suicide after being reprimanded by police for video-recording at RIMS-Adilabad. He was reportedly depressed following the incident. The organisations staged a sit-in in front of the institute here on Thursday.

The organisations alleged that Rahul ended his life due to police harassment. They said that RIMS staffers informed the police after Rahul video-recorded what they described as negligence in providing treatment after he was bitten by a scorpion, using his mobile phone on Wednesday. Rahul felt humiliated after being reprimanded by the police, they charged.

The agitators demanded compensation of Rs 50 lakh for Rahul’s dependents. They raised slogans criticising the RIMS authorities for allegedly showing negligence in treating patients. They urged officials to take steps to improve medical services at the institute by changing the attitude of the staffers. Local MLA Payal Shankar extended solidarity with the protesters and echoed their demand.

Rahul, who belonged to a colony of differently-abled persons in the town, allegedly died by hanging after police warned him against recording what was described as the indifferent attitude of the doctors. Doctors claimed that they had provided treatment as per norms. RIMS officials said an inquiry would be conducted into the incident and action would be taken against those found guilty.
