PV Sindhu settles for bronze in Tokyo Olympics

Beaten by Tai Tzu Ying on Saturday, Sindhu’s game fell into place on Sunday. The Indian star set up a good pace. She was quick on the court and meant business with her well-placed strokes that had Bing Jiao on the wrong foot.

Hyderabad: Rio Games silver medallist, PV Sindhu settled for a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics. In the battle for third place, Sindhu outduelled China’s He Bing Jiao 21-13, 21-15 on Sunday.

Beaten by Tai Tzu Ying on Saturday, Sindhu’s game fell into place on Sunday. The Indian star set up a good pace. She was quick on the court and meant business with her well-placed strokes that had Bing Jiao on the wrong foot. With athleticism and deceptive strokes, Sindhu dominated the match.


With wide range of strokes, Sindhu unsettled Bing Jiao and was in control at 11-8. The Chinese left hander made errors and Sindhu got better and better before winning the first game.

In the second game also Sindhu had better of exchanges at the start. She played the flicks and drives to a nicety and with tight netplay, the Indian kept the Chinese at the bay. However, Sindhu faltered by hitting wide and long before she led 11-9 at the breathless. On resumption, Sindhu regained her touch and raced away to win the bronze medal.

This is the second bronze medal in badminton after Saina Nehwal had become the first shuttler to win a medal in London in 2012 London Olympics.
