Hyderabad: The Rachakonda Cybercrime police on Friday caught a Nepal national on charges of duping people online after promising high returns on investments.
Officials seized copies of his Nepal citizenship documents, Aadhar card and two mobile phones apart from freezing Rs 3 lakh in his bank account. The arrested person, Tara Bahadur (33) from Khatmandu, was staying at Laxmi Nagar in New Delhi. According to the police, Bahadur who came to India in 2018, worked as a travel agent for a brief time. He then colluded with other cyber fraudsters and collected information of possible targets from social media.
“Posing as a European and citizen from other countries, he made friends with Indians and lured them with offers of investments for high returns. He created several fake Facebook accounts. He fraudulently procured KYC documents, PAN card, address proofs and other credentials and managed to open bank accounts,” an official said, adding that he also assisted other fraudsters in committing investment frauds.
“They lured the targets saying they would receive double returns on each investment. After collecting the money, they avoided the investors,” the police said. Based on a complaint, the cybercrime police booked a case and with the help of technical evidence, traced and nabbed Bahadur from New Delhi.
