Hyderabad: The Rachakonda Cybercrime police on Friday arrested a handloom worker on charges of harassing a woman and threatening her on Instagram. The arrested was identified as C Praveen (22), a ‘Maggam’ worker from the Vellanki village of Ramannapeta mandal in Yadadri-Bhongir district.
According to the police, the suspect came in contact with the victim about three years ago, when she was staying with her grandmother in the neighbourhood. They became good friends and were in touch over the phone and on social media.
“Eventually, he fell in love with her and proposed, but she rejected citing personal reasons. She later left the village and stopped talking to him,” police said, adding that Praveen then created a fake Instagram account and sent her a follow request.
“When she accepted his request without knowing it was him, he began sending abusive and threatening messages to her saying he would kill her and later end his life,” an official said. Praveen was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
