Hyderabad: Paediatric heart surgeons at Rainbow Children’s Heart Institute said they have opened (inflated) a narrow aortic valve for better blood flow to the heart in a 27-week-old foetus (still in mother’s womb) and successfully closed the puncture site with a device.
The surgeons said this was for the first time globally that an innovative device was employed to seal the puncture site following the intervention. The procedure known as ‘Fetal Aortic Valvuloplasty’ with device closure is a minimally invasive performed on a fetus still in womb to treat severe Aortic Stenosis.
The procedure was led by Dr. Koneti Nageswara Rao, Dr. Shweta Bakhru, Dr. Phani Bhargavi Dhulipudi, in coordination with a multidisciplinary medical team.
“After a healthy delivery, the baby was closely monitored and recently discharged in good health, marking a milestone in fetal cardiology and interventional medicine,” Dr. Koneti Nageswara Rao said.
