Warangal/Khammam: Light rain, hailstorms accompanied by high speed winds on Tuesday evening in several mandals in erstwhile Warangal and Khammam districts soaked paddy and maize stocks at procurement centres.
Paddy spread out for drying on roadsides and at procurement centres as well as sacks of produce kept in storage were completely soaked as hailstorms hit Regonda, Mogullapally and Chityala mandals in Bhupalpally district. Due to the unseasonal rains, stocks of paddy, maize and chilies were thoroughly drenched in several villages across Nadikuda mandal in Hanamkonda district.
A 34 year old man Tipparapu Nagaraju died in a lightning strike at Lingala village of Regonda mandal Bhupalpally district. Battered by gusty winds, a massive tree on the premises of Government Primary School at Chityala mandal headquarters was uprooted damaging a few two-wheelers under it. In Shayampet mandal, a century-old banyan tree on Katakshapur main road was uprooted.
In Khammam several villages in Chintakani, Konijerla and other mandals witnessed light rain accompanied by thunder; lightning and gusty winds. Farmers had to cover the farm produce with tarpaulin and plastic sheets to prevent it getting damaged by rains.
