Hyderabad: The initiatives of the State government in tiger conservation are yielding desired results. As per the All India Tiger Estimation 2018, there are 26 tigers in the State and with the fifth round of All India Tiger Estimation 2021-22 already in progress, there are expectations that the tiger population will increase further in the State.
As per the All India Tiger Estimation 2018, the overall tiger population in the country was estimated at 2,967, indicating that India doubled its tiger numbers in 2018, well before the targeted global deadline of 2022.
Forests Minister A Indrakaran Reddy flagged off a vehicle rally – ‘India for Tigers- A Rally on Wheels’ – on Monday organised by Telangana Forest Department that will go on till October 2. It is being organised under the aegis of the National Tiger Conservation Authority as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.
Covering Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the rally will cover Nagarjuna Sagar Tiger Reserve, Amrabad Tiger Reserve, Kawal Tiger Reserve, Satkosia Tiger Reserve and end at Simlipal Tiger Reserve. The Simlipal Tiger Reserve will be the focal point of celebration on October 2.
The rally will pass through 51 tiger reserves and 18 tiger States. It will cover a distance of over 7,500 km in seven days with the objective of increasing awareness of the importance of tiger conservation.
The rally is aimed at the twin objectives of celebrating India’s 75 years of Independence and spreading the message of biodiversity conservation under the ambit of Project Tiger and Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats (IDWH) programme of the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
