Hyderabad: Panic gripped residents of Pillipally village in Yacharam mandal, Ranga Reddy after a leopard killed a calf in the early hours of Monday.

According to forest officials, no one was injured in the incident. Local residents found the carcass of the calf with injuries and suspected that a leopard could have attacked it and immediately alerted the officials.

The forest department officials commenced an enquiry and are setting up a trap cage and camera trap at strategic location in the village, besides patrolling extensively in the entire area, a senior official from forest department said.

Generally, cattle farmers tie the cattle, especially calves in the temporary cattle sheds. This helps the leopards in attacking the calves easily as they cannot escape, the official explained.

This is not an isolated incident. Such incidents have been recurring in Yacharam mandal. The area around Kadthal, Yacharam and all the neighbouring villages covers about 5,000 hectares of forest. Leopards generally tend to move in Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, ICRISAT and other areas till Jawaharnagar corridor, the official said.

In the last four to five years, many leopard sightings or attacks on cattle have been witnessed in the above areas. Trap cages were set up and three to four leopards were also trapped. They were released in the forest after assessing their health condition, the official added.
