Hyderabad: Left-arm spinner Tanay Thyagarajan returned with 5-71 bowling figures as Hyderabad dismissed Bengal for 242 runs in their first innings on the opening day of the Group B Ranji Trophy match at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, on Thursday.

Inviting the opposition to bat first, Hyderabad bowlers did a commendable job to restrict the opposition to a low total. Player of the match from the first match against Chandigarh T Ravi Teja scalped three wickets (3/48) while B Punnaiah, who came in for injured CV Milind, took 2/32. However, Hyderabad lost two quick wickets in Akshath Reddy (0) and Thakur Tilak Varma (0) to end the day at 15/2. Bengal’s Mukesh Kumar took both the wickets. Hyderabad are still trailing by 227 runs.

Earlier, Ravi Teja struck in his first over removing AB Easwaran when the right-arm pacer castled the batter’s wickets. Punnaih then got rid of Sudip Kumar (14) in the 11th over. Ritwhik Roy (33) and Sayan Shekhar Manal (34) tried to rebuild the innings for Bengal with a 47-run partnership for the third wicket before the former was removed by Tanay as his first scalp in the day.

Punnaia got his second wicket when he forced an edge off Sayan to wicketkeeper Prateek Reddy in the 42nd over while Ravi Taje trapped Anustup Majumdar in front of the wicket to reduce the opposition to 114/5. Tanay tightened the noose removing Manoj Tiwary cheaply as Bengal were struggling at 116/6. However, Abhishek Porel (73 off 62; 10×4) and Shahbaz (40 off 61; 2×4) played counter-attacking knocks to add 74 runs for the seventh wicket to revive Bengal innings.

Tanay broke the partnership when he removed Shahbaz but Abhishek added another 40 runs for the eighth wicket with Akash Deep to take his side past 200-run mark. Ravi Teja then uprooted the stumps of Abhishek in the 70th over before Tahany scalped his fifth dismissing Ishan Porel to wrap up the innings.
