Hyderabad: Indian Test cricketer G Hanuma Vihari, who returned to Hyderabad this domestic season, hit 59 runs and stitched two crucial partnerships to guide Tanmay Agarwal-led side to 270/7 at stumps on the opening day of the Group B Ranji Trophy match against Chandigarh, at Vikash Cricket Ground in Cuttack on Thursday.
Vihari hit eight boundaries in his 134-ball essay and added 51 runs with youngster Thakur Tilak Varma for the third wicket and another 51 runs for fourth wicket with Himalay Agarwal to bail out Hyderabad. Though other batters got starts, none could go on to make a big score.
Asked to bat first, captain Tanmay (16 off 45) and experienced P Akshath Reddy (28 off 56; 5×4) added 38 runs for the opening wicket before the captain departed off Rajangad Bawa. Bawa then sent Akshath back to pavilion in the 19th over to reduce Hyderabad to 48/2. Tilak, who was bought by Mumbai Indians in IPL auction, scored 32 off 64 (5×4) to steady the innings and took the team to lunch without any further loss. However, he departed in the 36th over.
Vihari applied himself well and reached his half-century at the other end. Gaurav Gambhir then broke the partnership dismissing Himalay. Gambhir then ended Vihari’s watch with a caught in his own bowling to push Hyderabad to 186/5. However, wicketkeeper batsman Prateek Reddy (36 off 73; 5×4) and all-rounder T Ravi Teja (32 off 40; 2×4, 2×6) kept the scoreboard ticking.
At stumps, Tanay Thyagarajan (20 batting) and debutant Mickhil Jaiswal (12 batting) are at the crease. For Chandigarh, Jagjit Singh Sandhu scalped three wickets while Rajangad Bawa and Gaurav Gambhir took two wickets apiece.
