Rannvijay Singh shot to fame with the MTV reality show Roadies and has since dabbled with hosting and acting gigs. Looking back at his journey, he tells us how he combined his love for bikes with his professional work and pandemic giving him time to pursue activities long forgotten.
Tell us about your journey with Roadies.
My journey with Roadies has been pretty awesome. I was 20 when it started, and now I’m 37 so, it’s a part of my life. We go to different parts of the country and the world. We have new tasks and contestants. The show is adapting to the new-age trends and the youth.
What are the movies and series you’re currently working on?
I’m currently working on a Netflix series titled Mismatched that’s just released on November 20. I’ve also continued work on the series Kaushiki, which premiered last year and is up for the second season now. This season’s working title is Sumer Singh Diaries, which will come out soon. Apart from this, I’ve been working on a lot of YouTube content. There’s also the next season of Spitsvilla scheduled for early 2021.
Do you have any connection with Hyderabad? Would you like to work in the Telugu film industry, if given a chance?
I love the Telugu film industry, and would definitely love to work there sometime in the future. I’ve a pretty strong Hyderabad connect, my mother’s sister is married into a Hyderabad-based family, and some of my family members from my wife’s side are based here too. I am very close to Nagesh Kukunoor and Elahe Hiptoola from Hyderabad since I keep visiting for events pretty frequently. We have also done Roadies Auditions there. I’m close to some of the Roadies from the region like Baseer Ali, who belongs to Hyderabad.
How are you coping with the pandemic?
First of all, it’s been difficult to see people coping with the lack of resources and struggling to even find a place to go to, while we sit at our homes. Some people aren’t with their families, while others are putting their lives at risk. In this scenario, I’m grateful to be able to be with my family and spend time with them. I’m looking at it from the glass-half-full perspective. It’s given me time to work on a lot of things with my daughter, like some edits that I always wanted to do. I’ve also figured out stuff about some sneakers and tried to finally read books I’ve been meaning to. Overall, I have been telling people that in this pandemic if you’re still not doing the things that you really wanted to but couldn’t find the time, then time is not the issue.
What are your passions? We heard you love comics and bikes.
I have many passions, one of them is riding bikes and going on adventures. In this duration, whenever I got a chance to go on a solo bike ride, keeping all safety measures and social distancing in mind, I ventured out. I simply love bike riding, so I’ve been trying to figure a way to ride bikes safely here at London. Another passion of mine is sports, whenever I find a hoop, I spend time on a basketball court.
Was it always your dream to be a TV host?
Actually, while growing up I wanted to join the Indian Army, and serve the country just like my father and five generations of my family. It was seen as a natural, organic path for me since I loved the lifestyle. I’ve always liked being active, travelling, playing a lot of sports, and adventure in all forms. However, I incidentally joined Roadies Season 1 to win the bike and saw all my passions combine in the show.
Tell us about SquadRann and your association with William Lawson’s.
SquadRann was formed by bringing together all my passions of sports and adventure, and like-minded people. We work on projects that help us engage with these passions in a fun way. The association with William Lawson’s is simply perfect for SquadRann as it brings together sports and adventure, with an out-of-box approach. It gave us a chance to put our minds together and come up with some disruptive ideas.
