Hyderabad: In a rare occurrence, a rare Black Marlin fish weighing 78-kg was spotted at the Proteins Non Veg Mart in Manikonda here. Usually found in the Pacific Ocean, the fish reached the city after being caught in Visakhapatnam a day ago.
Said to be one of the fastest fishes in the world with a speed of 129-km per hour, a Black Marlin can also jump 70-80 feet off the water surface. People behind popular YouTube channel Grandpa Kitchen bought it for Rs 40,000.
Proteins Mart owners Vijay Chaudhary Tripuraneni (CEO), Vamsi Raj (Director) and Ravi Shankar (Franchise) said that the Black Marlin was caught after 10 days of hard work. This is the first time that such a big fish was brought to Hyderabad, they said, adding that usually such fish are cut wherever they are caught with only the pieces reaching the city.
Marlins have a long, sword-like upper jaw which is used to slash and stun fish, making them easier to catch. They are close relatives of the swordfish. A migratory species, it travels hundreds or even thousands of miles in warm currents, they said.
