Hyderabad: Ravali Parandi and Tanuja Kameshwar, both of the Telangana Sailing Association, sailed away to glory when they clinch gold and bronze medals respectively in the Youth Nationals conducted by the Yachting Association of India off the coast at Mumbai.
Parandi also won the Maj Gen. Harry Kapoor Trophy for the best sailor without a discard by a whopping 60 point lead. The young Hyderabadi had done well in the Monsoon Regatta in Hyderabad but could not win a medal. She made amends by winning a silver at the Mysuru Nationals in August.
Tanuja Kameshwar, a relatively an inexperience competitor, shocked the fleet with good top five positions in 10 races before she closed with a bronze. This was her maiden medal at a National event.
“Getting ahead of the far more experienced Ravali and Divanyshi Mishra of Bhopal (Silver) in a few races gives me the confidence that I can win the next nationals”, said a brimming Tanuja.
Both sailors study at the Udbhav School at Rasoolpura that is supported by the IIM Ahmedabad Alumni led by Mr.H.Sitaram.
Expressing his satisfaction at the performance of the young sailors, coach Suheim Sheikh said Ravali’s reading of the winds and ability to take a lead and cover the fleet was a sheer joy to watch.
Lt.Gen. KS Rao, President of the TSA, said: “Our sailors from Telangana are surpassing themselves and proving that the land locked state of Telangana is far superior to all the coastal states.“
