Hyderabad: Redeem Tlang’s stunning first-half goal proved decisive as defending champions NorthEast United FC edged past a spirited Shillong Lajong FC 1-0 to enter the final of the 134th IndianOil Durand Cup, in a repeat of last year’s semifinal clash.
Chema Nunez, Jithin M.S., and young forward Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia led the Highlanders’ attack, while Mayakkannan Muthu and Andres Jose Rodriguez manned the midfield. At the back, captain Miguel Zabaco marshalled the defence alongside Asheer Akhtar, Redeem Tlang, and Buanthanglun Samte, with Gurmeet Singh in goal.
The Match: The first half was cagey, with Shillong Lajong keeping NorthEast United’s attackers quiet. The only real attempts came from a Chema Nunez header and a long-range effort from Rodriguez, both comfortably saved. At the other end, Lajong relied on counter-attacks, with striker Everbrightson Sana causing trouble but unable to convert.
The breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute, moments after referee S. Senthil Nathan was replaced due to injury. From 30 yards out, Redeem Tlang unleashed a powerful left-footer that deceived Lajong goalkeeper Siwel Rymbai, giving the Highlanders the lead.
In the second half, Shillong pressed harder for an equaliser. Rodriguez struck the post, while Ajaraie missed a golden opportunity after failing to connect with Andy’s precise cross. Despite their efforts, Lajong could not find a way through, as NorthEast held firm.
Result: NorthEast United FC 1 (Redeem 36’) bt Shillong Lajong FC 0
