Hyderabad: Residents of Anandbagh, Malkajgiri, are facing acute water scarcity due to the depletion of groundwater, leaving households struggling to meet their daily drinking water needs.

The groundwater shortage has affected multiple localities in Anandbagh, where residents said water sources have run dry and supplies remain insufficient to meet their daily needs.

The Anandbagh Residents Association raised the issue after its members approached the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), requesting board officials to launch a house-to-house campaign to educate, encourage and assist residents in setting up Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) pits in their homes.

“Residents of Anandbagh area in Malkajgiri are facing acute water scarcity this season due to lack of rainfall. The groundwater levels have depleted and most of the local borewells have dried up completely,” residents said.

Given the severity of the crisis, immediate action is needed to secure water resources, said a member of the Anandbagh Residents Association. Proactive rainwater harvesting is the most viable way to recharge depleted aquifers and prevent a total water crisis, he added.

The Residents Association has also come up with pamphlets outlining key concerns and challenges related to groundwater scarcity, titled ‘Hyderabad Facing Growing Groundwater Crisis’, and distributed them among residents in the Anandbagh area. The association also represented the issue to the HMWSSB Managing Director and the Chief Secretary, Telangana.
