Hyderabad: Like several other assurances, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s promise to fill one lakh government jobs by mid-June 2026 remains unfulfilled.
In July last year, while launching the distribution of new ration cards in Nalgonda, the Chief Minister announced that the government would fill one lakh vacancies before completing two-and-a-half years in office, setting June 2026 as the deadline. Even though the deadline has passed, the promise remains unfulfilled. Given the State government’s financial situation, achieving the target now appears difficult.
The Congress government has been claiming that it filled 70,000 government jobs after coming to power. However, the main Opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has disputed the claim, arguing that most recruitment notifications were issued and the process began during its tenure.
On Saturday, BRS working president KT Rama Rao challenged the Chief Minister to produce details of the recruitment notifications supporting the claim of filling 70,000 jobs. He said he would retire from politics if the Chief Minister proved him wrong.
Ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections, the Congress had made several promises to unemployed youth in its manifesto. These included filling two lakh government jobs within a year, providing a monthly honorarium of Rs 4,000 to unemployed youth, distributing electric scooters to women above 18 years pursuing higher education, and several other assurances. None of these promises has been fulfilled so far.
The Congress had also promised to release an annual job calendar by June 2, listing vacancies across departments, and complete recruitments by September 17 every year.
Although Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka released a job calendar in the Assembly in August 2024, recruitment notifications were rarely issued according to the schedule. Instead, both the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister claimed on several occasions that unemployed youth were urging the government to slow down the release of recruitment notifications.
Amid these unfulfilled promises, unemployed youth continue to express disappointment. Adding to their concerns, the Chief Minister stated at a programme at Dr BR Ambedkar Open University in January 2025 that the government was considering increasing the retirement age of professors to 65 years.
