The combat, variety of weapons, and special moves are spectacular in the game
Hyderabad: The RPG genre has been a bit of hit and miss of late, Cyberpunk 2077 flattered to deceive and while there have been great games with RPG elements baked in, we simply haven’t had a great representative of the genre in recent years.
The trend was supposed to change with next gen gaming and Biomutant was supposed to lead the charge. Set in a spectacular post-apocalyptic world, where rodents are protagonists there is simply too much promise in the premise.
Our first impressions of the game have been nothing short of weird. This is a game unlike any other but it isn’t necessarily a good thing. Set in a world recovering from an apocalypse, the game requires the player to decide if the world will thrive with life or be reduced to a wasteland. Aided by a simple narrative plot that seems inspired from Harry Potter at times, this game has all the right ingredients but not the right final mix.
For instance, the world is beautiful and the attention to detail fantastic, ray-tracing lights it all up but the narration in the background is simply in the way. Just when you feel the story is relatable and you are ready to have a moment of emotional attachment, the narration and dialogue ruin it. The game’s developers knew the shortcomings and there is even an option to dial down the narration in-game but it’s simply not enough.
Similarly, the class system, skills, and weapons are well defined but the game also has a binary karmic system that measures your decisions on moralistic grounds. Measured in light and dark, the game at times is more Sunday school/ethics class than a world to explore.
In terms of gameplay; the combat, variety of weapons, and the special moves are spectacular but it is all just too simple. At times you can chain special moves in an instant and there seems just no challenge in the combat. In the eighteen hours it took me to finish the game at the highest difficulty, I died just once and as I levelled up it all only got easier. Despite all the right game mechanics this not a world one can fall in love with or lose themselves in.
An RPG that can’t captivate its players, this one has a damaged soul. A game for those wanting to experience the genre for the first time maybe?
