Hyderabad: “I’m not guilty, I’ve not done anything,” screamed Sanjoy Roy soon after the Seldah court convicted him in the heinous RG Kar case, wherein a second-year post-graduate trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered in the dead of night.
Roy, a 33-year-old man from Kolkata who was arrested on August 10, 2024, was finally convicted on Saturday. However, the Seldah court pronouncing him guilty is just the latest chapter in a disturbing saga of impersonation, extortion and violence.
Roy, who initially joined the Kolkata Police’s Disaster Management Group as a civic volunteer in 2019, has a history of exploiting his position, manipulating those around him, and committing heinous acts.
His association with the Kolkata Police began when he was recruited as a civic volunteer in 2019. He was later transferred to the Police Welfare Cell and assigned to a police outpost at RG Kar Hospital on several occasions.
His role, however, allowed him access to all departments within the hospital, and sources reveal that Roy took advantage of his position in sinister ways.
Roy allegedly masqueraded as a police officer, often wearing a Kolkata Police T-shirt and using his connections to secure stays in police barracks. But his abuses went further.
Roy was reportedly involved in a hospital racket, extorting money from patients’ relatives by promising them beds and other hospital services, all of which were supposed to be free. Sources claim that Roy charged bribes for beds, sheets, and other essential hospital services, exploiting the vulnerable and desperate.
In addition to his crimes at the hospital, Roy was also accused of exploiting innocent job seekers. He allegedly took money from people, promising them positions either as civic volunteers or within the police force, despite having no authority to do so.
His fraudulent activities extended beyond the hospital, as he manipulated the aspirations of many in exchange for cash.
Roy’s personal life also paints a dark picture of domestic violence and abusive behaviour. According to reports, he has been married multiple times. His first three wives reportedly left him due to his abusive nature, while his fourth wife passed away after battling cancer.
Those who knew Roy described him as a habitual offender, with a pattern of violence towards women, further adding to the disturbing details about his character.
Further investigations into Roy’s activities revealed disturbing and violent pornographic clips on his mobile phone. His alleged involvement in the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder led to his arrest on August 10.
Although Roy kept reiterating his innocence saying, “Why are those responsible allowed to go free? I am not guilty. The conspiracy was framed by many,” his ‘pleas’ fell on deaf ears, with authorities having found compelling evidence linking him to the crime. But will this put an end to his manipulation spree?
