Nirmal: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technologies (RGUKT)-Basar extended Dussehra holidays for students due to El Nino conditions and alleged water crisis until further orders were issued. An order to this effect was issued on Wednesday.
As per the order, the university deferred recommencement of classes to students from Pre University Course (PUC) 1 to Engineering 4 by few days ‘owing to extraordinary circumstances surrounding El Nino and in the interest of students’ welfare’. The date of recommencement of classes would be communicated soon, the order mentioned. The holidays concluded on Friday, according to a previous order.
Meanwhile, it was learned that the university was reeling under severe drinking water crisis following El Nino pattern. So far, the university reportedly managed to supply 15 lakh liters as against daily requirement of 25 lakh liters with an irrigation tank, a source of the institution, going dry due to scanty rainfall.
The authorities were compelled to extend the holidays fearing the shortage would cause inconvenience to around 9,000 students studying at the campus. They are said to be taking steps to overcome the shortage. They are planning to draw water from Godavari river, soon. They announced the extension of the holidays as an alternative measure.
