Nirmal: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) has declared holidays for students of Pre-University Course (PUC) first and second years, and engineering first and second years from March 23, following ongoing student protests.
In a statement issued on Sunday, officials said the decision was taken to prevent disruption to the academic calendar amid protests over alleged inadequate medical facilities on campus after the death of a student.
The protests were triggered by the death of Mallipudi Tejashwini, a PUC second-year student from Medak district. The university said the date for resumption of classes would be announced later and advised students to utilise the break productively.
Students launched protests on March 17, alleging poor medical facilities and demanding Rs 50 lakh compensation for Tejashwini’s family. They staged a protest at the Vice-Chancellor’s office and raised slogans seeking justice.
Meanwhile, Tejashwini’s parents have demanded that the government ensure justice and adequate compensation. They staged a sit-in at the RGUKT entrance on Friday.
Tejashwini, 17, a resident of Ramachandrapuram in Medak district, died of leukemia while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad on March 16.
