Hyderabad: The Telangana BJP on Wednesday urged Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to use her special powers as custodian of the Constitution and advise the State Election Commission (SEC) to postpone the local bodies’ elections.
In an email to the Governor, BJP OBC Morcha National president K Laxman and others said Covid-19 had created a fear among people who are afraid to come out even for day-to-day needs. Scientists, medical fraternity and Health Minister Etela Rajender have been advising people to be careful.
There are reports of rise in Covid cases after the recently concluded Nagarjunasagar by-election and it was evident that electioneering had precipitated the situation there, the BJP leaders said. “In a situation like this, it is important to reflect on whether it is wise to conduct elections for local bodies,” they said.
“The BJP strongly believes that this is the time for all of us to set our priorities right. Elections for local bodies are important, but more important is the lives of people,” he said. Elections ought to happen in a free atmosphere but not in a situation when every individual is sceptical of another for fear of infection.
Under these circumstances, the electioneering process would expose parties, workers and people to high risk, Laxman added.
Meanwhile, Laxman, while interacting with media persons, demanded that the State government implement a health emergency and convene an all party meeting to discuss the measures to be taken on priority basis to contain the spread of virus.
He also demanded that the State government take necessary action against corporate hospitals which were imposing exorbitant charges in the name of treatment to Covid patients. He urged the government to bring Covid treatment under Arogyasri keeping in view the problems being faced by people.
