Hyderabad: Accidents claimed 134 lives in Hyderabad in the last six months, with the highest number of deaths, 95, being attributed to over-speeding. The same period saw 39 pedestrians also being killed in accidents.

The Traffic Police, releasing data of fatal road accidents from January 1 to June 30 this year, said the highest number of fatal road accidents took place in February, when 36 persons lost their lives followed by 29 deaths in April, 20 in March and 18 each in January and June while 13 lost their lives in May.

“The Traffic Police are taking all steps to prevent accidents by identifying black spots. Around 50 black spots were identified and in coordination with other agencies, rectification works were taken up to reduce accidents at those spots,” Anil Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) said.

The Traffic Police said 95 deaths were due to accidents caused by over speeding, six due to drunk driving, eight due to driving on the wrong side and three due to minors driving. Fifteen deaths were due to negligence in driving and due to sudden movement of dogs on the stretch.

Anil Kumar said the police were creating awareness among people by organising programmes on road safety. “Recently T-20, a traffic awareness test app was also launched to bring awareness among the youth on road safety and traffic rules. Three short films were also released on road safety,” he said, adding that the Traffic Police were reaching out to people, especially students through social media as schools and colleges are closed due to the pandemic.
