Road sinks beneath two-year-old BHEL flyover, raising safety concerns among commuters

A road section beneath the two-year-old BHEL flyover on NH-65 in Sangareddy has sunk nearly a foot, sparking fears among commuters. While residents allege poor construction quality, R&B officials attributed the subsidence to geotechnical settlement and promised immediate repairs

Sangareddy: It appears neither the Roads and Buildings (R&B) department nor the contractor of BHEL flyover had learnt any lesson from the earlier fly-over collapse incidents like the Panjagutta flyover scaffolding which claimed two lives.

As the road started sinking under the flyover constructed at the BHEL Junction on NH-65, several citizens using the way are worried over their safety. A few of them posted the videos and photographs on social media exposing the poor quality of the works.

Shockingly, the 1.65 km long fly-over construction was completed just two years ago and it was inaugurated by the union Minister of Road Transport and Highways. The government had spent Rs 132 crore on the project. The road under the flyover at the ‘U’ turn, going towards Chandanagar from Lingampally and BHEL area, started sinking a month ago.

It has sunk nearly a foot deep. Due to this, the road also suffered cracks on one side of the edge close to a pillar of the flyover. Since thousands of people use the road every day, it would result in a disaster if it collapses.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Auto Driver Yellesh said that they were avoiding to stop underneath flyover fearing the collapse. He further said that the vehicles were getting damaged as the road here sank in. Interestingly, the Miyapur Police will check the vehicles and impose fines for traffic violations. However, the police registered no case against the contractor for the poor quality of the work.

BHEL employee Surendar urged the government to take up a scientific study of the sinking of the road here, to find out whether it posed any threat to the flyover. Meanwhile, the road users, who were taking the flyover, said that the flyover was not even supporting 40 KMPH speed drive.

They observed that the flyover was shaking when any vehicle moves at a high speed. However, DEE (R&B) Sandeep dismissed it as a minor incident. The DEE said that the roads usually sink due to geotechnical settlement underneath the road. He said that they would lay another layer of the road shortly here.
