HYDERABAD: One of India’s greatest batters ever, 38-year-old Rohit Sharma, has announced his retirement from Test cricket.

“Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites,” Rohit said in a statement posted on his social media handle, Instagram.

“Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format, Rohit said

This move comes ahead of the Indian team’s tour to England this summer and amid reports that he would be stripped of his captaincy following his poor form in the last tour to Australia.

However, many critics and former players felt that Rohit as a batter would be an asset in England, given his experience.

In this context, Rohit’s decision was a surprise of sorts for the cricketing fraternity and the fans.

For the record, Rohit Sharma played 67 Tests, scoring 4301 runs with 212 as the highest score at an average of 40.57 besides hitting 12 centuries and 18 fifties.
