RTC sets up EV charging stations at two depots in Hyderabad region

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation has initiated steps to establish EV charging stations at Ibrahimpatnam and Midhani depots as part of its efforts to expand electric bus services. The RTC currently operates around 458 electric buses in the region.

Hyderabad: As part of its efforts to expand the electric bus network across the Hyderabad region, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has initiated steps to establish electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at its Ibrahimpatnam and Midhani bus depots.

The RTC authorities are learnt to have already made the required payments to the electricity distribution authorities for providing the necessary power infrastructure, including high-voltage connections, dedicated transformers and substations. The RTC is gradually increasing its fleet of electric buses with a focus on reducing emissions and promoting environmentally friendly public transport.

Of the nearly 3,200 buses currently operating in the Greater Hyderabad region, around 458 are electric.

The existing EV fleet includes 100 buses each from Hayathnagar-2, HCU and Miyapur-2 depots, 50 from Kukatpally, 68 from Cantonment and 40 from Ranigunj depots.

As part of its network expansion, Ibrahimpatnam and Midhani depots have been selected to improve EV connectivity to the IT corridor and the suburban areas. Once the charging infrastructure becomes operational, additional electric buses are expected to be introduced on routes served by these depots.

The RTC is also expected to begin charging station works at Dilsukhnagar shortly.

Reliable high-voltage power supply is crucial for operating EV charging stations. The RTC has reportedly deposited the required amounts with the electricity distribution companies towards power supply charges and infrastructure works, including transformer and substation-line connections.

Officials are expected to speed up the electrical infrastructure works, with the charging stations at Ibrahimpatnam and Midhani likely to become operational within the next few months.
