Hyderabad: The Prohibition and Excise Department is witnessing a heavy rush of people applying for liquor shops licences in their respective areas. Till Monday, the department had received over 6,400 applications for 2,620 shops. The highest number of applications were received from Khammam, which is a border district between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
For 122 shops, officials so far received 2,400 applications and the number might go up to 8,000 on the last day of receipt of applications on Thursday, officials said. Almost a similar number of applications were received from the erstwhile Nalgonda district. The applicants submitted a form after paying Rs 2 lakh non-refundable fee for each shop. Meanwhile, the Excise Department officials are making elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the draw of lots on November 20.
“We will scrutinise each application before carrying out the draw of lots in the presence of the District Collector concerned,” an official said. Of the total 2,620 wine shops, reservations were being implemented in 756 shops. Among these, 363 shops were reserved for Goud community, 262 for SCs and 131 STs. To avail reservations, an applicant has to submit community certificate before submitting the form.
