Hyderabad: With a mega purse of US$7.37 million available to fill 84 slots, the SA20 Season 4 Player Auction, scheduled in Johannesburg on September 9, is set to be the most anticipated event yet.
All six franchises have completed their pre-signings, retained players, and wildcard acquisitions. They will now focus on building their 19-player squads with the remainder of their allocated US$2.31 million each — the second-highest salary cap in franchise cricket after the IPL.
Pretoria Capitals have the largest purse of US$1.86 million and are looking to rebuild their squad after restructuring their coaching staff. Legendary former India captain Sourav Ganguly has taken charge as head coach, supported by former Proteas captain and SA20 commentator Shaun Pollock, who joins as assistant coach.
Durban’s Super Giants, with US$1.66 million, will continue with their settled coaching staff of Lance Klusener and Allan Donald. The squad already features big names like Jos Buttler, Sunil Narine, Heinrich Klaasen, and Afghanistan’s young spin sensation Noor Ahmad.
Joburg Super Kings, with US$1.2 million in their purse, will aim for smart buys. Skipper Faf du Plessis was pre-signed, along with James Vince, Richard Gleeson, Akeal Hosein, and Donovan Ferreira.
Two-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape, known for their auction strategies, still hold the record signing of Tristan Stubbs for US$0.522 million. Stubbs has been retained for Season 4, along with MVP Marco Jansen. The franchise also roped in Afghanistan mystery spinner Allah Ghazanfar, New Zealand pacer Adam Milne, and England international Jonny Bairstow.
