Hyderabad: Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar made his Test debut exactly 50 years ago on this day in 1971 against West Indies. Gavaskar went on to become one of the finest openers ever to play the game and made a name for himself.
Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who idolised Gavaskar during his growing up days, paid tributes to the legend on twitter. Tendulkar took to twitter writing, “50 years ago today, he took the Cricketing World by storm. He scored 774 runs in his debut series and each one of us had a hero to look up to. India won the series in the West Indies and then in England and all of a sudden the sport in India had a new meaning. As a young boy I knew I had someone to look up to and try and be like him. That has never changed. He remains my hero. Wish you a happy 50th in international cricket Mr Gavaskar. To everyone of the 1971 team a happy 50th Anniversary. You all made us proud and showed us light.” A few cricketers too joined the list in congratulating Gavaskar on the occasion.
