Hyderabad: Sixth-seeded Sahaja Yamalapalli of India and Hiroko Kuwata of Japan won the women’s doubles title at the ITF $35,000 tennis tournament in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) on Monday.
This was Sahaja’s first doubles title on the pro circuit. She had previously won four singles titles.
The 23-year-old, Hyderabad-based Sahaja, who was recently ranked India No. 1 in women’s singles, emulated Sania Mirza, the illustrious six-time Grand Slam winner from the city, and Kuwata recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win against Esther Adeshina of Great Britain and Sofia Elena Cabezas Dominguez of Venezuela in the final.
