Hyderabad: What do food and current affairs have in common?

Quite a lot, as young contestants discovered at VISTA Quiz – Current Affairs, organised by Sri Vishnu Educational Society (SVES) at BVRIT HYDERABAD College of Engineering for Women, Bachupally, on Saturday.

The quiz brought together 138 students representing 69 teams from 23 schools across Hyderabad, with participants drawn from Classes 8th to tenth. Among the highlights was an innovative “Food for Thought” round, in which contestants literally ate their clues before attempting to answer the questions. The round added an element of surprise and experiential learning to a competition that otherwise tested students’ knowledge of contemporary events, general awareness and their ability to connect facts and ideas.

The competition featured a written preliminary round, two semi-finals and a final. Saint Paul’s High School, represented by Laksh Chavan and Mohd. Armaan Ullah Siddique emerged victorious, securing the first prize of Rs 20,000. Army Public School, Bolarum, finished second, receiving Rs 15,000, while Little Flower School, Uppal, won the third prize of Rs 10,000. For Saint Paul’s, it was a remarkable comeback.

Having narrowly made it through the semifinal, the team staged another recovery in the final to edge past Army Public School. The result was also a reversal of fortunes from the inaugural VISTA Quiz earlier this year, when Army Public School had won a closely contested final, relegating Saint Paul’s to the runner-up position. This time, Saint Paul’s turned the tables on their rivals. The VISTA Quiz Circuit is the brainchild of KV Vishnu Raju, Chairman of SVES, whose personal passion for quizzing and belief in education beyond textbooks have been central to the initiative.

Conceived as a continuing series of inter school competitions rather than a one-off event, the circuit seeks to encourage curiosity, independent thinking and awareness of the world among school children. The current affairs quiz was the second competition in the circuit, following its inaugural event in Hyderabad earlier this year. The quiz was conducted by Nyayapati Gautam, Director – Quizzing, VISTA Quiz, whose high energy, interactive style kept the proceedings lively and engaging.

Going beyond the conventional question-and-answer format, he encouraged contestants to think aloud, make connections and approach questions from different perspectives, combining intellectual challenge with the excitement of live competition. With its tagline “Where Curiosity Competes,” VISTA Quiz reflects SVES’s commitment to creating opportunities for young people to experience the excitement of learning, discovery and intellectual competition.
