Sangareddy DCC president appointment remains unresolved amid Congress infighting

The Congress continues to face a deadlock over appointing a DCC president in Sangareddy, with rival leaders backing different candidates. Ujwal Reddy, Chandrashekhar Reddy and Nagesh Shetkar remain among the top contenders, while incumbent T Nirmala Jagga Reddy could continue.

Sangareddy: The logjam over the appointment of the District Congress Committee (DCC) president appears to be a never-ending saga. Even after the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) coordination committee held consultations with all the key leaders across the five constituencies, they reportedly failed to arrive at a consensus on the appointment.

While Minister Damodara Rajanarsimha was backing Zaheerabad Congress leader S Ujwal Reddy, the proposal had faced serious opposition from Narayankhed MLA Patlolla Sanjeeva Reddy and Zaheerabad MP BB Patil, who were also arch-rivals within the Congress. While Sanjeeva Reddy was seeking the post for his brother Chandrashekhar Reddy, Suresh Shetkar was backing his brother Nagesh Shetkar as DCC president.

TPCC Working President T Jagga Reddy and Patancheru constituency incharge Kata Srinivas Goud were also backing Ujwal Reddy, supporting the Minister’s recommendation. AICC observer Deepak Rathod, PCC Coordination Committee MD Riyaz, Nerella Sarada and D Srinivas Babu conducted meetings with all the constituency leaders by Tuesday.

Since Ujwal Reddy was focusing on the Zaheerabad Lok Sabha constituency, Suresh Shetkar and Patlolla Sanjeeva Reddy strongly opposed his candidature. Sanjeeva Reddy and Shetkar were competing for the Narayankhed Assembly constituency and Zaheerabad Lok Sabha constituency every time. These two leaders from Narayankhed were of the opinion that the entry of Ujwal would restrict their political opportunities.

Since there was a serious demand for the appointment of a BC leader as DCC president, the list of aspirants swelled to eight, while Ujwal Reddy, Chandrashekhar Reddy and Nagesh Shetkar remained the top contenders. Since Ujwal Reddy had good relations with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Minister Damodara Rajanarasimha, he remained the favourite for the post.

However, the biggest challenge before the committee was whether it would dare to take a decision against the wishes of Shetkar and Sanjeeva Reddy.

Meanwhile, there was talk that the PCC would persist with incumbent DCC president T Nirmala Jagga Reddy. Since Nirmala’s tenure as TGIIC Chairperson came to an end on July 31, there were arguments that the PCC might continue her as the DCC president.

The Congress Party could not find the right DCC presidents in three districts in Telangana, including Sangareddy, while announcing the DCC presidents for the remaining districts in November 2025. They continued the incumbent Nirmala in the post since then. Will the committee be able to find the right candidate this time? The question is being discussed by Congress cadres.
