Warangal Rural: With the increased use of smart phones, the authorities of the Government Degree College (GDC) at Narsampet have come up with a novel idea of pasting the Quick Response (QR) codes on the trees grown on the college campus spread over 18 acres of the land. Upon being scanned using the smart phones, these QR codes will provide complete information pertaining to the respective trees.
Speaking to ‘Telangana Today’, College Principal and Executive Council (EC) member of the Kakatiya University (KU) Lt Dr Bathini Chandramouli said that the teachers of the Department of Botany had developed the QR codes and pasted them on some of the trees.
“Students can use any scanning app available on the phones to get all the information they need to know about the tree, from its scientific name to its medicinal value,” he said, adding that they had pasted the QR codes on about 26 species of the trees by laminating the QR code generated through the computer on the paper.
“There are about 400 trees on the campus. However, in the first phase, we have decided to paste the QR codes to trees that were planted in the last five years since I assumed office as the Principal,” Chandramouli said. Stating that they had planted hundreds of saplings under the ambitious ‘Haritha Haram’ programme in the last five years, Dr Chandramouli said that the trees were already geo-tagged following the directions of District Collector M Haritha.
The Principal has also urged the people to plant medicinal and other plants at their houses in Narsampet town and thus protect the environment. It is said that several other colleges in the district had also decided to paste the QR codes on the trees available on their respective colleges.
The QR codes will help the smartphone users learn about a plant or a tree at the tip of their fingers, said Botany lecturer Medistetti Narender.
“The installation of QR codes is very much helpful for gaining knowledge about the trees. Getting information has become easier as it helps us save time and effort that is required to scan books at the library for the same purpose,” said Srinivas, a third year BSc student, and suggested that the Narsampet municipal authorities should also take up this project in the town since the people can also get the information about the trees in their locality in order to encourage them to conserve greenery around them.
