Hyderabad: NGO Cantonment Vikas Manch on Saturday urged the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to relocate the existing old Begumpet Airport to Dundigal Airport.
The DGCA has released a gazette notification to prepare a draft on the Aircraft (Demolition of Obstructions Caused by Buildings and Trees etc.) Rules-2025, and civilians can submit their objections or suggestions within 21 days.
Cantonment Vikas Manch General Secretary, Sanki Ravinder Babu, speaking to media said Begumpet Airport was situated in the heart of the city and surrounded by a dense population, posing a risk to both airport and civilian safety.
The recent flight crash in Ahmedabad was an example of how safety for the civilians gets compromised, he said. Begumpet Airport is surrounded by numerous colonies and a Navy aircraft, Kiran MK-II, crashed in the Bowenpally area, Secunderabad Cantonment, during the India Aviation 2010 air show held in 2010, said Ravinder.
The Begumpet Airport is currently used for VIP movements, pilot training, and parking of small air force training flights.
