Hyderabad: In the shed at Lallaguda, a youngster was busy honing his skills in welding, while another was trying to pick up the finer nuances of repairing electrical appliances. There were others too, some engaged in learning the skills of milling and others catching up with required field expertise to be a fitter.
That was not all. At the South Central Railway (SCR) Carriage Workshop, Lallaguda, the group of youngsters on Friday sat in classrooms to hear with rapt attention as trainers explained about safety aspects involved in handling machinery, first-aid in times of emergencies and also ways to procure and store raw material.
Under the Rail Kaushal Vikas Yojana, the SCR is organising free skill development programme for the first batch of unemployed youth which concludes on Saturday. Being held under the Ministry of Indian Railways and Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the programme aims to train around 300 people with theory and practical sessions pertaining to the trades of electrical, fitter, welding and machinist.
Selected trainees divided into groups of 25 to 30 students each undergo training for 18 days. From material handling to movement of raw material and financial management to effective communication, the training covers a wide range of topics. The programme is open for aspirants in the age group of 18 years to 35 years.
SCR officials said the programme would be very helpful to youngsters looking for jobs or seeking to upgrade their skillset. “After the workshop, they can seek employment or explore the possibilities of being self-employed. It will also act as a crash course if the students opt for higher studies,” said C.Sirisha, chief instructor, Basic Training Centre, Lallaguda, SCR. The trainees on successful completion of training and clearing an examination are given certificates.
