Sealed ‘Super Mario’ game from 1996 sells for a record-breaking $1.56 million at auction
The sale follows an unopened copy of Nintendo’s ‘The Legend of Zelda’ selling at auction on Friday for $870,000

A sealed cartridge of Nintendo’s ‘Super Mario 64’ sold for $1.56 million at auction. Heritage Auctions in Dallas said that the 1996 game, which is one of the first versions of the game still in existence, broke its previous record price for the sale of a single video game.
‘Super Mario 64’ was the best-selling game for the Nintendo 64 system, and is widely seen as an important game in video game history. It was the first to showcase the Mario character in 3D.
However, this copy of the N64 classic did not have any rare or special sign of being the first prints. The spokesperson of the Heritage Auctions did not immediately comment on the buyer of the game.

The 9.0 A sealed copy of 1988’s game has gone on to be one of the best-performing and most critically-acclaimed in Nintendo’s entire catalogue.
Nintendo’s ‘Super Mario’ was first released in Japan on June 23, 1996. The game then was released in North America and Europe by the end of 96 and the beginning of 97.
